Pool Shutdowns: A UK Winterisation Checklist

A pool shutdown should leave you with a protected installation and a clear plan for the months when you are not swimming. It is more than switching the pump off and pulling a cover across the water. The right winterisation approach depends on your pool construction, equipment, exposure and plans for using the pool. This guide helps you prepare for a professional shutdown and understand the handover.

Decide whether you are closing or continuing to swim

Tell your engineer when you expect to stop swimming and when you want to reopen. A fully winterised pool and a pool kept operating through winter need different instructions. Do not copy settings from a neighbour or assume that a frost protection control can protect every component in every weather condition.

Pentair distinguishes active winterisation, which retains operation, from passive winterisation, which closes equipment down. Its guidance also warns that moving water can still freeze in severe cold. Use the manuals for the actual equipment fitted to your pool and a site-specific assessment.

Prepare information before the shutdown visit

  • Record the pool dimensions, finish and equipment makes and model numbers.
  • Photograph the plant room, heater connections, cover and any unfamiliar valves.
  • Report water loss, air in the system, unusual pump noise or recurring error messages.
  • Explain access arrangements and whether somebody can check the pool during winter.
  • List any upgrades you would like assessed while swimming has stopped.

A short description of a problem is more useful than a vague request to service everything. For example, say when the water level drops and whether it happens with the circulation running. Keep manuals and previous maintenance records available.

Agree the equipment protection plan

Ask the engineer to identify what will remain operating and what will be isolated and protected according to manufacturer instructions. This may include pumps, filters, heaters, treatment equipment, pipework and water features. The procedure is specific to the installation; this article is not a valve-setting or draining instruction.

Do not empty the pool or lower its water level without professional advice. Groundwater, construction and the pool finish can make an apparently simple draining decision costly. An overflow pool also has additional equipment and a balance tank to consider. See our infinity pool design service for the design features that make these installations different.

Check the cover and the surrounding area

Inspect straps, fixings, roller operation and visible wear before the shutdown date. Tell the engineer if a cover has been difficult to deploy or has been damaged. A heat-retention cover is not automatically a safety cover, and a winter cover is not a substitute for controlled access and supervision.

Our range of swimming pool covers and rollers can help you discuss a suitable replacement. Compatibility includes the pool shape, cover type, anchoring arrangement and available storage space. Clear loose garden items away from the pool and retain a safe inspection route; never walk on a cover to remove debris.

Leave with a written winter handover

  • The agreed water level or acceptable range for this particular pool.
  • Which equipment is operating and which is isolated.
  • What to check, how often, and when to call an engineer.
  • Instructions for the cover and safe removal of accumulated water or debris.
  • An emergency contact route and the proposed spring reopening visit.

Keep the handover somewhere accessible to everyone responsible for the property. A holiday absence is a reason to arrange cover, not a reason to abandon checks. Consider obtaining suitable pool water testing kits if water monitoring forms part of your agreed plan.

Use the closed season to plan improvements

Winter can provide a useful window to assess worn finishes, difficult cover handling and ageing plant. Request separate quotations for essential repairs and optional improvements. A shutdown visit can identify issues, but it does not automatically replace a detailed refurbishment survey.

Read about our pool design, installation and aftercare process and ask how a refurbishment assessment can fit around the planned reopening date. Booking discussions early gives more time to investigate and specify work without promising that every repair can be completed before a fixed swimming date.

Frequently asked questions

When should I book a pool shutdown?

Book before the period when you expect to stop swimming, allowing time to address cover or equipment faults. The actual closure date should suit your location, weather and pool operation.

Should a swimming pool be completely drained for winter?

Do not drain it as a routine winter task. Ask a pool professional to assess construction, groundwater, finish and equipment before changing the water level.

Can I use a summer cover for winter?

Only if the manufacturer and your engineer confirm it is suitable for the intended conditions. Heat retention, winter protection and safety are separate requirements.

Does a closed pool still need checks?

Yes. Follow the shutdown handover and arrange checks after significant weather or whenever you notice damage, unusual water levels or equipment problems.

Can you inspect repairs during a shutdown visit?

Mention defects when booking. The team can discuss inspection requirements and whether a separate survey or quotation is needed.
